Music
Bands on stage, in the rehearsal room and in front of a backdrop. Live shows, studio sessions and promo portraits for musicians.
On stage
Photographing a concert means working with what's there: lights that change every two seconds, haze, no room, and no chance of asking anyone to repeat a gesture. Stage lighting isn't a problem to correct for me, it's the colour of the evening, already chosen by someone else: you just have to read it.
I'm looking for the moment the musician stops performing and starts living inside the song. It usually arrives once they've forgotten someone is photographing them.
In the rehearsal room and the studio
Some of these images are made far from any audience: in rehearsal rooms and recording studios, among headphones, stands and cables. It's the side of a band people see least, and often the one that says most about who they are: the focus, the jokes between takes, the drummer shut in his booth.
Promo portraits for bands
For promo shots I build the light: full-colour backdrops, gels, backlight, the band in silhouette or a single face split between red and blue. The images have to be recognisable and survive cropping for a cover, a poster, an event page or a social profile, with a style that holds from one frame to the next.
If you have a record coming out, a tour starting, or a band whose profile still carries a picture taken on a phone, that's exactly the kind of work I'm after.
Where
I work with bands and musicians across Tuscany, between Siena, Arezzo and Florence, in venues, rehearsal rooms and studios.
