Personal
The work that doesn't fit a category: music, live shows, stories, and frames caught for their own sake.
Live music
A good part of this page is music. Photographing a concert means working with what's there: lights that change every two seconds, haze, no room, and no chance of asking anyone to repeat a gesture. That's exactly why I like it.
On stage I'm looking for the moment the musician stops performing and starts living inside the song — it usually arrives once they've forgotten someone is photographing them. Stage lighting, which many photographers treat as a problem to correct, is the gift of the evening for me: it's already colour, already a decision, you just have to read it.
The work nobody commissioned
The other images come from travelling, or from behind the house. A dirt road under a black sky, an animal that pauses a second too long, falling water, the Tuscan hills when raking light turns them into a drawing. There's no brief and no deadline: these are photographs made because they were there to be made.
I keep them here because it's the most honest part of the trade. A commercial portfolio shows what I can deliver; this page shows how I look at things when nobody tells me what to look at — and it's often what convinces the people who then call me to work.
Bands and music projects on commission
I also do stage photography and group portraits on request: promo images for bands, covers, photographs for press and event pages. If you have a record coming out, a tour starting, or simply a band whose profile still carries a picture taken on a phone, that's exactly the kind of work I'm after.
What I'm looking for
Nearly all of these images have the same thing in them: a moment when something is about to change. The musician an instant before the downbeat, the animal that has already decided to leave, light that will be gone in two minutes. They aren't constructed photographs, they're waited-for ones — and the difference is mostly about staying still for longer than seems reasonable.
Colour is the opposite: I go looking for it. The red of a backdrop, the cyan of a stage lamp, the green of a leaf against a toucan's orange beak. People who call me for commercial work have usually seen these first, and already know the kind of images they'll get back.
Where
Across Tuscany for concerts and commissions, and wherever a trip takes me for the rest.
